16.03.2008 - The Cheese Monkeys and The Learners
To be honest, I was surprised that I hadn't picked up these gems sooner. The Cheese Monkeys and its sequel The Learners were written by Chipp Kidd, an amazing graphic designer in NYC who makes these exquisite book jacket covers (most notably the first edition hard covers of every Chuck Palahnuik book). These two books follow the exploit of "Happy," an unnamed narrator who majors in Art at a state school because he hates the subject. Ironically, during his second semester he has a hard-ass "commercial art" teacher that places him in the fast track to a career in graphic design. The second book follows his exploits as a freshly minted college graduate.
I haven't picked up a copy of The Learners just yet, but reading The Cheese Monkeys in one day was definitely justified putting off my apartment cleaning for another day.
(Also, here's a video that Chipp Kidd made to promote his newest novel.)
